It is finally Spring, the ice is off the lake, the safety fence is down, and I can run out onto our dock. Once again, I hear the words I love to hear -- "Maxie. Duck, Duck, Goose."
That is my command to run out the door, down off the deck, across the yard to the lake and out onto the dock, scattering and chasing ducks and geese back into the water as I go. I LOVE it. Honking, and quacking, feathers flying and I get to bark. It just doesn't get much better than this.
I could growl every time I hear someone say "Look at the cute squirrel."
"Cute" they say? Have they forgotten squirrels are rodents? You know, as in they are related to mice and rats? As far as I can see there is little difference between them, mainly a bushy tail and their mode of operation. Squirrels are right in your face while mice and rats tend to sneak and scurry around.
Squirrels are my most despised enemy. They invade my yard and chew up the flower bulbs and plants and constantly try to raid the bird feeder. Thank goodness for squirrel proof feeders. They even gnawed into our neighbors' house in hopes of building a nest. I was told that they have caused power outages.
I have tried to herd them. I chase, but they can jump high and climb, which I can not. You just don't find Corgis climbing trees, I know, because I have tried.
Once squirrels make it up a tree or telephone pole the little pests just chitter away. It doesn't take much to recognize squirrel laughter, especially when they are dropping twigs and leaves on my head.
So, if you want to look at something cute, stick with your dog, or even your cat. Forget those bushy tailed, gnawing, and disrespectful rodents.
